School Board meeting highlights Grandhaven technology use

This week’s School Board meeting featured an interactive presentation of digital learning by Grandhaven students. Led by teachers Robin McClendon and Kathy Mika, students partnered with board members, district staff and some audience members to showcase some of the ways they are using technology to learn.

First graders showed how they use digital storytelling on iPads to enhance their writing skills with the 30Hands app. The students brought samples of writing they had completed in class and showed how they used the camera and QR Code reader to import their story images onto their iPad.  Once the images were digitized, the students sequenced and captioned their stories, and recorded their voices reading what they had written, turning their projects into little movies.

Fourth and fifth graders demonstrated some of the projects they are working on in their after-school coding club. The program is part of a district-wide initiative intended to expand opportunities for students to learn core skills that are expected to be critical in the 21st century job market.
