Nine staff members of McMinnville High School (MHS) attended the AVID Summer Institute this month. The institute is an annual professional learning event created to help educators learn the latest in AVID methodologies and strategies to successfully implement the national college readiness program in their schools.

Teachers and administrators Doug Barsotti, Amy Fast, Darcy Houston, Nicole Long, Carly Moran, Rachelle Overholser,  Susanne Sayles, Jory Shene and Tony Vicknair spent three days learning how to build on MHS’s first year of participation in the AVID program.

Out of 215 participating Oregon schools, the MHS team won special recognition as "Team Oregon" from Nike. The award was culled from a short essay and interview on what MHS envisions for their AVID students.

“We talked about how to implement AVID throughout the high school and district-wide,” said Dr. Amy Fast, assistant MHS principal. “We noted that our high school students are more prepared to harness their passions and pursue their purposes than other students in Oregon.”

The McMinnville School District’s participation in AVID is made possible by a grant from the Nike School Innovation Fund.
