Duniway Middle School teacher Jeremy Hurl has been named Oregon’s Outstanding Teacher of American History by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).  He was recognized for the honor on Saturday, May 20 at the DAR’s American Revolution Awards in Wilsonville.

Hurl was awarded a commemorative pin, certificate and a check for $500 by the DAR’s national president General Ann Turner Dillon. He was named DAR’s Yamhill chapter winner in February.

He plans to use the cash award to take a history trip this summer to explore some national parks as well as follow parts of the Oregon Trail and the Lewis & Clark journey.

The award recognizes a current teacher who fosters a spirit of patriotism and support for the U.S. constitutional government and who demonstrates an ability to relate history to modern life and events. The award noted Hurl’s efforts to provide active learning experiences for students by providing team problem-solving exercises, re-enactments, field trips and guest speakers.
