“Juntos” families take field trip to Oregon State University
Posted on 05/02/2017

On Saturday, families from McMinnville High School, Duniway and Patton middle schools traveled to Corvallis for “OSU Family Day,” which was a culmination of the six-week Juntos (“Together”) program. The families visited the Oregon State University (OSU) campus for a day of activities and informational presentations about various programs in different colleges. Parents and students also browsed a resource fair with over 40 booths from organizations within and outside of OSU, including Chemeketa Community College.

The national Juntos project involves culturally relevant programming for eighth- to 12th-grade students and their parents designed to provide families with knowledge, skills and resources to prevent youth from dropping out of high school and to encourage families to work together to gain access to college.

The program includes:

  • Curriculum: Six-week workshop series with family involvement
  • Family follow-up sessions: Monthly workshops, events and activities
  • Afterschool Clubs: Academic success, community service, college applications, financial aid, leadership development and cultural activities
  • College visits: Summer camps and college/program connections

Collectively, McMinnville schools served over 60 families in 2017 through the local Juntos program.
