About the department

The Nutrition Services department strives to provide the best tasting, nutritionally dense meals we can.

Every item served has been carefully formulated to ensure maximum nutritional benefits – from the breading on the chicken nuggets, to the whole grain tortillas, breads and pizza crust. Everyday our meals include a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. We believe that healthy eaters make better learners.

We follow the legislated rules governing what can be served to students – including calorie content, fat and sugar grams and serving size by age group. The Wellness Program and District Wellness Committee govern these rules. We work diligently to ensure our meals, snacks, vending machines and every food-related activity in the district meets these guidelines.

Our produce is primarily purchased through local farmers and vendors. Our produce distributor is Duck Produce, out of Portland, OR. Duck Produce is a Food Alliance Certified distributor that distinguishes foods produced with respect for people, animals and the environment. Duck Produce carries an abundant supply of locally grown foods.

We purchase local foods whenever possible, with respect to quality and costs. MSD participates in educational programs like the Oregon Department of Education’s Oregon Harvest for Schools, which highlights different local fruits or vegetables every month of the school year. The companion resources support the concept that the cafeteria can be an extension of the classroom, where students learn the healthy habits necessary for academic readiness and success.

Nutrition Services is bound by federal procurement policies. This policy includes focus on purchasing locally whenever possible and practical. Our commitment to local purchasing supports our community farmers and returns resources to the economy. We also know that buying local foods is one way that our school can support local farms and our local economy. Plus, fresher food just tastes better!
