STEM camp for middle school girls

Nearly 80 girls attended the seventh annual STEM camp for middle schoolers at the Evergreen Space Museum this week.

The girls cycle through several different sessions, including new offerings in forensics, DNA and game programming, among others.

“I’m really excited about the computer programming addition,” said McMinnville High School science teacher Andrea Brown, who has run the program since its inception.  Brown added that the addition was possible because MHS Computer Sciences pathway teacher Taghrid  Elmeligui stepped up to teach the unit.

“The girls are really engaged,” said Brown.  “They’re working on Game Theory and programming and learning how to program interactive stories.”

Other participating teachers include David Larson, Michele Brantner, Suzanne Jensen and Kelly Shipley.

The camp is funded by a grant from the 21st Century Community Learning Center.
