Ease into school with transition camp

Transition camp helps young learners prepare to start school

transition campIncoming kindergartners and first graders can ease into school by attending a transition camp. Beginning Tuesday, August 25 and running through Thursday, August 27, the grant-funded program gives the young students a chance to visit the school and meet new classmates and staff.

“The goal is for young students to feel connected,” said Kyra Donovan, director of Elementary Education.  “Coming into the building, meeting their teacher and learning some classroom routines are ways to make them feel comfortable and ready to start school.”

The students stay for 90 minutes each day and rotate between arts and crafts, a read-aloud time and outside play.  For all schools (but Grandhaven), the time for incoming first graders is 8:30 – 10 a.m.  Kindergartners visits between 10:30 – noon.  All students will be served a snack.

For Grandhaven, the kindergartners visit first from 8:30 – 10 a.m. and the first graders come between 10:30 and noon.

The camp is funded by the Oregon Department of Education, Kindergarten Innovation Partnership program.
