One of the biggest fundraising events at local schools is the school jog-a-ton. Students bring in pledges for the laps they run or walk. Memorial and Wascher elementary schools have both wrapped up their fall fun run fundraisers.

At Memorial, more than 500 students ran and walked 10,424 laps, which is equal to 1,303 miles. Family members and teachers also ran and walked for a total of 13,152 laps or 1,644 miles. The new Memorial Bulldogs mascot helped cheer on the runners.

The event raised more than $14,000.

At Wascher, students raised more than $5,000, which will fund new soccer goal posts on the playground. About 136 brought pledges in for their laps, but all of the students participated in the run and pledges were $1,100 higher than last year.

The highlight for the students was after the jog-a-thon, when Principal Kourtney Ferrua, joined by School Board Director Scott Gibson, made good on a promise to kiss a pig if the students met the $5,000 goal. The hand-picked pig, a five-week-old from Turley Farms, wore a pink tutu for the occasion.

Wascher will also host a carnival fundraiser in the spring.
