Farm to Summer win.2019

District wins statewide “Farm to Summer Challenge”

McMinnville School District (MSD)’s Nutrition Services won top honors for the Oregon Department of Education’s Child Nutrition Program’s 2019 Farm to Summer Challenge.

The competition focused on three components, including using at least one local food item in the summer meals menu; leading an educational or enrichment activity focused on the fresh farm produce theme; and sharing the Farm to Summer activities on social media, websites or other media outlets.

The award noted that MSD chef Caroline Hamina added local fruit to summer meals including  strawberry rhubarb Italian ice and homemade apple leather and also partnered with the summer STARS program for a butter-churning activity using locally sourced, organic cream.

Nutrition Services supervisor Cinthia Hiatt-Henry and Catering manager Jeri Paull (pictured, right to left) were instrumental in mounting the campaign.

Hiatt-Henry and Paull also visited the McMinnville Farmers Market to locate local produce vendors and incorporated local quinoa from Willamette Valley Quinoa, basil and watercress for pesto from Rogue Aquaponics, fresh strawberries from Aichele Farm, and plums from Stephens Farm.
