McMinnville Schools participate in Farm to Summer Challenge

The McMinnville School District (MSD) is taking on the Farm to Summer Challenge during the week of July 15 – 19.  All district summer meal sites will include locally sourced produce, and the STARS program will feature learning activities about food education.

Menu items include local quinoa from Willamette Valley Quinoa, basil and watercress for pesto from Rogue Aquaponics, strawberries and rhubarb for Italian ice, and apples for fruit leather, as well as fresh strawberries from Aichele Farm, plums from Stephens Farm, and other produce from McMinnville’s Farmers Market.

“Summer is a great time to introduce children to different kinds of fresh fruits and vegetables,” says MSD Nutrition Services Supervisor Cinthia Hiatt-Henry. “Because we serve fewer meals during the summer, the lower volume gives us a chance to try some of the smaller growers during the vacation months, and we can offer a wider variety of local produce during the prime growing season.”

The STARS program will use local, organic cream to make butter and travel to the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center to learn about how the pioneers packed their wagons and managed food along the way.
