This week’s board meeting celebrated School Board Recognition Month with a formal proclamation of appreciation and gifts of books.

Click here to read the proclamation that was presented by Dr. Maryalice Russell, superintendent of McMinnville School District.

Each school principal also presented a board member with books that will be donated to school libraries in the board member’s honor.

In other board business, Dr. Darlene Geddes, principal of Sue Buel Elementary, introduced school counselor Jan Allen and a team of fifth-grade students – Liliana Sanchez, Leah Cazares, Valeria Ponce, Kyle DeWeese, Ava Bizon and Charlotte Brame – who demonstrated the school’s Peer Mediator program.

The Peer Mediator program at Buel is composed of the student leadership team and its primary role is to help others solve conflicts at school. The fourth and fifth grade students are chosen by their teacher through an application process.

Selected students receive training on how to help their peers resolve conflicts under adult supervision. The training includes problem-solving, decision-making, listening and other skills.  The other leadership jobs are helping with the weekly Husky ticket drawing, school assemblies, and creating posters and bulletin boards.

Dr. Russell also presented McMinnville High School choral director Robin Pederson with flowers and invited her and choir members to recount their experiences that morning performing at the inauguration of Governor Kate Brown at the Oregon Capitol.
